Herbert E. Meyer
Best-Selling Author and Former Vice Chairman of the CIA's National Intelligence Council

What in the World is Going On?
A Global Intelligence Briefing for CEO's

Today more than ever before, CEOs and other top-level executives need to understand what is going on in the world. Key trends in politics, economics and even culture have an impact on every business, and to manage effectively executives must know what these trends are, how they will affect our economy, and what opportunities these trends may generate for their own companies. Moreover, today's CEOs are leaders in their communities - often serving on public and community boards -- and people look to them for guidance and insight on national and international issues.

In this presentation, Herb Meyer will talk about the national security, economic and cultural issues that dominate the news:

  • What is "the war" really all about - and why are revolutions setting the Mideast on fire? What is likely to happen in the months ahead?
  • How will the demographic crises in Western Europe and Japan keep those economies from growing, and what will be the impact of their economic weakness on our economy?
  • What demographic problems do we face in North America, and how will our businesses be affected by our own low birth rates and high rates of immigration
  • What's really going on in China and India?
  • What lies behind the astounding - and under-reported -- growth of the global economy, which is bringing between 50 million and 100 million people out of poverty every year?
  • What opportunities will this growth provide in the decades ahead for American businesses?

Herb Meyer served during the Reagan Administration as Special Assistant to the Director of Central Intelligence, and Vice Chairman of the CIA’s National Intelligence Council. In these positions, he managed production of the U.S. National Intelligence Estimates and other top-secret projections for the President and his senior National Security advisers.

Prior to his service with the U.S. Government, Herb Meyer was an associate editor of Fortune, where he was among the magazine’s top international specialists. He is author of several books, including Real-World Intelligence, The War Against Progress, and Hard Thinking. And with his wife, Jill, he is co-author of How to Write, a handbook used widely at colleges throughout the world.

Mr. Meyer’s articles and essays on politics, and about our country’s intelligence service in the wake of 9/11, have been published in The Wall Street Journal, National Review Online, and Policy Review. He is a frequent guest on leading television news programs.

Harry Moser
Founder of the Reshoring Initiative and Chairman Emeritus of GF AgieCharmilles

Offshore or Reshore? How to Help Your Customer Objectively Decide

During this session you'll learn new strategies to help your customers make the right decisions on sourcing of components. Using the tools provided by Harry Moser, founder of the Reshoring Initiative, including the Total Cost of Ownership Estimator ™ software, you'll be more effective in communicating your message during customer negotiations. (As part of this session attendees will receive a copy of the Total Cost of Ownership Estimator ™ software.)

Part of this program will also be devoted to developing the best reshoring arguments for the precision machined products industry. Recent reports by Boston Consulting Group and Accenture call for substantial amounts of offshored manufacturing to come back to the United States by 2015 due to offshore wage and currency inflation. Bring your best reshoring examples to discuss at this interactive session.

Harry Moser founded the Reshoring Initiative to bring manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. by helping OEMs better understand the full cost of offshoring and the benefits of reshoring. Largely due to the success of the Reshoring Initiative, Harry was inducted into the Industry Week Manufacturing Hall of Fame 2010, joining Jack Welch, Steve Jobs and Lee Iacocca.

Harry worked for GF AgieCharmilles, the leading producer of EDM and HSM machine tools, starting as President in 1985 and currently as Chairman Emeritus. He earned some screw machine creds, as the National Acme Manager, Aftermarket Sales and Service in the early '80s. He writes and speaks nationally on how to strengthen the skilled manufacturing workforce, strategies for competing with LLC countries, strategies for revitalizing U.S. manufacturing, and on the impact on manufacturing of President Obama's and Congress' actions and policies.

Harry has been on CBS and Lean Nation radio, quoted in The Wall Street Journal and USA TODAY and in numerous articles in the industry and supply chain press and spoken at a broad range of conferences, including at the National Press Club. He is on the board of NIMS and is President of SMTS (Swiss Machine Tool Society).

William A. Strauss
Senior Economist & Economic Advisor
Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago

2012 Economic Outlook

The "Great Recession" of 2008 and 2009 ended in the middle of 2009 with significant impacts on the economy. The economy experienced outsized losses in the housing, manufacturing and jobs. Yet, what should be a robust recovery is not occurring, nor expected. Consumers are saving at an increased pace, limiting the growth of consumer spending. Credit conditions, while significantly improved from what existed during the recession, remain relatively tight and will act as a headwind to growth.

Mr. Strauss will look at the performance of the overall macro economy with specific attention paid to key economic sectors and indicators.

William A. Strauss is a Senior Economist and Economic Advisor in the Economic Research Department at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, which he joined in 1982. His chief responsibilities include analyzing the current performance of both the Midwest economy and the manufacturing sector for use in monetary policy. He produces the monthly Chicago Fed Midwest Manufacturing Index and organizes the Bank's Economic Outlook Symposium and Automotive Outlook Symposium. In addition, he conducts several economic workshops and industrial roundtables throughout the year.

Mr. Strauss has taught as an adjunct faculty member at Loyola University Chicago and Webster University in Chicago. He currently teaches at DePaul University Kellstadt Graduate School of Business, and at the University of Chicago Graham School of General Studies.

His research papers include analysis of the manufacturing sector, the automotive sector, the Midwest regional economy, the trade-weighted dollar, business cycles, and Federal Reserve payments operations.

Mr. Strauss has been interviewed on numerous television and radio shows and quoted in the major business magazines and newspapers. He has also provided testimony concerning manufacturing issues to the U.S. Senate.
