In June, OSHA issued an enforcement memorandum instructing their CSHO’s to “be mindful of whether the employer has provided and maintained adequate means of egress from work areas, eg., adequate number of exit routes are provided, exit routes are free and unobstructed, and exit doors are not locked.”

21 PMPA member shops across the country took part in MFG Day 2013.
Here are some photos and some lessons learned:
Lesson 1: Pride of Job. The hosts at the various shops were obviously proud of the work that they do and the equipment that they use.
Lesson 2: People doing the work connected with the attendees. In nearly every case hosts- guides, speakers and demonstrators- were the actual workers on the machines.
Lesson 3: Connection and interest existed in attendees.
Lesson 4: Manufacturing is an area worthy of career consideration. ask the hundreds of attendees to PMPA member shops hosting MFG. Day Events.
Manufacturing Day participation by PMPA member companies helped to change the perception of Manufacturing in the minds of attendees- some of whom we will employ as our future workforce.
And in their communities.
Next year, we hope that you can open your shop to the local community and potential workforce as part of MFG Day 2014. Our 2013 experience tells us that you’ll be glad that you did.

“Manufacturing jobs are plentiful in Erie County and throughout North America.
That’s the word from Darlene Miller, President of the Precision Machined Products Association. Miller was in Fairview today touring the shop at American Turned Products. She says there are job openings at every shop she has visited. She says the challenge facing manufacturing shops is finding interested and qualified people to fill job openings. She blames parents who are not encouraging young people to consider a career in manufacturing.
“We’re the guilty ones because we’re not showing them what manufacturing’s all about. Plus, our schools have stopped having any kind of manufacturing-type classes, whether it’s tool shop, automotive, or whatever. So they’re not exposed to manufacturing and they have no clue how high-tech it really is,” Miller said.
American Turned Products currently has 130 employees. It plans to increase its work force by 30% by the end of next year.”
Today is Manufacturing Day.

Everyone knows that the type of coating for a job is the most important thing to consider. Right?
Obviously, using a diamond type of coated tool on a steel part is a bad idea, as the carbon from the diamond will readily dissolve into the steel. So in the case of chemical incompatibility / misapplication, I guess what everybody knows is correct.
But after listening to George Korenyi-Both of Dayton Coating Technologies, I found myself agreeing with his 3 factors to understanding tool coatings.
According to George, the three factors are Adhesion, Thickness and Morphology.
IN THAT ORDER.
- The Adhesion of the coating is 10,000 times more important than the type of coating, according to George.
- The Thickness of the coating is 1000 times more important than the type of coating.
- The Morphology of the coating is responsible for about 10 times the advantage over the type of coating.
What good is a high tech coating to your job if it won’t stay on the tool when you need it?
If it isn’t thick enough to be effective?
At that point, does it really matter what type of coating it is? Or what its structure is?
The ISM PMI report issued today is the highest reading for the year to date.
PMPA’s Business Trends Index for August was up substantially (6.7%), and we believe that the PMPA index is a leading indicator for industrial activity. ( You can’t ship your manufactured goods if our precision machined components aren’t in them.)
The September ISM PMI reaching its high for the year validates our belief in the Business Trends as a leading indicator.
“The PMI™ registered 56.2 percent, an increase of 0.5 percentage point from August’s reading of 55.7 percent. September’s PMI™ reading is the highest of the year, leading to an average PMI™ reading of 55.8 percent for the third quarter. The New Orders Index decreased in September by 2.7 percentage points to 60.5 percent, and the Production Index increased by 0.2 percentage point to 62.6 percent. The Employment Index registered 55.4 percent, an increase of 2.1 percentage points compared to August’s reading of 53.3 percent, which is the highest reading for the year.“- Bradley J. As businessmen and women, we’re obviously pleased with the Increase in the PMI.
However, The employment index also reached its highest point for the year to 55.4, up 2.1 %.
We continue to be optimistic about employment opportunities in advanced manufacturing, and ISM report supports our claim for this too.
