PMPA Action Alert: 232 Steel and Aluminum Tariffs

by Renee Merker | Mar 05, 2018

On March 1, 2018, President Trump announced he is imposing 25% tariffs on imported steel and 10% on aluminum imported from any country, including our defense allies. The President instructed the Department of Commerce to take steps to impose tariffs and restrict imports of steel and primary, semi-finished aluminum and aluminum castings and forgings. The action is a result of recommendations in reports he requested in two separate 232 Investigations into the Effect of Imported Steel and Aluminum on National Security.

The 25% steel tariffs on all countries applies to the import of flat, long, semi-finished, pipe and tube, and stainless steel. The President also mandated a 10% tariff on aluminum plate; sheet, strip, and foil (flat rolled products); wire; bars, rods and profiles; tubes and pipes; tube and pipe fittings; castings; and forgings.

The PMPA is helping lead efforts in Washington opposing these tariffs, which will raise the cost of manufacturing in America and result in increased imports of precision machined products from overseas – containing foreign steel or aluminum and entering the U.S. duty-free. A PMPA member and representative met with Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross expressing concern over the impact tariffs will have on downstream manufacturing industries. Our lobbying team in Washington is working with the White House and Congress to educate them on this and PMPA is raising funds to launch a public relations campaign to end the tariffs before the cause further injury to U.S. manufacturers.

We need your help NOW contacting your members of Congress and the White House letting them know how tariffs on steel and aluminum will hurt your business. PMPA members recently met with more than 30 members of Congress during the PMPA Washington, D.C. Fly-in asking that they urge the White House to not impose tariffs. However, we need your help supporting that message.

Contact your members of Congress TODAY and ask that they urge the President to not take unilateral action on all steel and aluminum products.
