It’s steel, right? A solid uniform hunk of metal. Wrong! Join PMPA ‘s Staff Technical Director Miles Free as he gives you an understandable peek at what is inside that steel to make it machine- Or Not. This session will be an easy to understand program with photo’s handouts and demonstrations to show you how chemistry, mechanical properties, and processes can all impact your shop operations.

What does steel look like under the microscope? What chemical elements should you look for on a cert if you are (or are not!) having difficulties machining or crimping? What happens if you leave a couple revs of tool dwell on a workpiece? Get the answers to these and other shop mysteries that will help you better understand the role of the workpiece in your machining operations.

This program is especially focused on operations, but supervisors, engineers, buyers, quality control and even sales people will get a better understanding of what it means when the steel to be machined is “X”.

Miles Free has been a lab supervisor, plant metallurgist, plant manager, and director of quality and technology in the steel industry prior to joining PMPA. He brings an easy to understand way of presenting that will assure that you can use what he presents on the job in your shop.
