Don Ake

SESSION:  Supply Chain Realities

Don is the chief analyst for the commercial vehicle markets at FTR, the industry leader in freight transportation forecasting.

He is a highly respected industry analyst in forecasting the demand for Class 8 trucks, commercial trailers, and medium duty trucks. He manages the
forecasting process at FTR and is responsible for providing accurate, timely, and logical forecasts for the industry.

Don is the principal author, responsible for providing commentary, data analysis, and forecasts for the Truck & Trailer Outlook service. He is also a
contributor for the State of Freight Insights, which looks at trends in freight transportation.

His background includes analyzing historical market data and translating how the macro economy impacts commercial vehicle markets. Don excels in
communicating his findings in creative ways. His 30 years of extensive transportation industry experience, including time with a component manufacturer, provide Don with an insightful, customer oriented perspective.

Don resides in Northeast Ohio and holds an M.B.A. from the University of Akron. He has taught college courses at Indian Wesleyan and Walsh Universities. He has also authored three, short essay humor books.

Cole Blumer has over thirty (30) years of experience in export compliance and international trade in the defense industry. He has worked with numerous defense, aerospace, and commercial companies in the US and abroad with internal and DDTC-directed audits, assessments, onsite compliance programs, licensing, specialized training, and commodity jurisdiction activities.

In 2006, Cole founded Reliant Defense, Inc., which helps companies establish and improve ITAR-compliant programs. One of our company’s core competencies is our understanding of the importance of balancing regulatory requirements, governmental expectations, industry accepted standards with what is reasonable for a company based upon their risk profile. Our backgrounds and experiences allow Reliant to render real-world applicability in our training and assessment approach and enables us to make recommendations based upon actual experience, practicality, industry standards and best practices.

Prior to founding Reliant Defense, Cole served as an Empowered Official as well as worked in other business disciplines including international contracts, procurement, business development, program management and global sustainment strategies with companies that included Lockheed Martin. Derek Briggs

Derek Briggs began his engineering career at F&F Machine Products in Indiana, where he was born and raised. At F&F, Derek set up Brown & Sharpe screw machines and learned to program and set up Tsugami CNC Swiss Lathes. Derek moved to the Bil-Mac Corporation in Michigan, where he continued to work on Tsugami machines.

In 2011, Derek joined Tsugami/Rem Sales as an Applications Engineer. He quickly advanced to Presales Test Cut Lab Lead in 2014, putting finished parts in customers’ hands quickly and efficiently. In 2015, he was promoted to Engineering Manager where he led the team for over two years.  Then he was promoted to Product Manager in 2018, where Derek is tasked with researching and implementing new technologies that integrate with Tsugami machines and improve the overall customer experience. Derek often travels domestically and internationally, researching tooling components and working directly with the engineering team at Tsugami Japan to ensure that all Tsugami machines are equipped with the latest technology and mechanical abilities for the North American market.

Derek’s future aspirations are to assist, support, and help to continuously improve the Tsugami experience for Rem Sales’ customers in every way possible.

John is President of Lester Detterbeck Enterprises Ltd. and of B&S Machine Service, Inc. Lester Detterbeck Enterprises Ltd. is one of the oldest Technical Members companies in the Association (1962). John is the fourth generation in the industry. He became involved in the precision machining industry in 1976, attending his first Tech Conference in 1977.

John has provided invaluable contributions to our members through his committee participation, as a Technical Officer and District Officer, and especially with his willingness to share his technical expertise at District and National functions.  He has been a featured speaker at the National Technical Conference multiple times and has spoken at the District level over 20 times. 

John was awarded the “Technical Member Distinguished Service Award” in 2005, the Gold Micrometer by PMPA in 2017 and The Frank T. McGinnis Merit Award, the highest honor awarded to a member of PMPA in October 2018.

Osny Fabricio, Head of Cutting Tools, Americas, is responsible for the strategic and technical development of the Cutting Tools segment in the Americas. He is also responsible to develop new applications together with our sales force and customers and supporting Oerlikon’s sales team in enhancing their technical knowledge. Osny was born in Brazil and has significant experience and education. He has an undergraduate and master’s degree in Business Administration from the University
of Sorocaba (Brazil). He also has a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Campinas (Brazil) and a master’s degree in Business & Operational Excellence from Saint Vincent College at Latrobe, PA in the United States. With several years of experience working directly with the cutting tools industry, Osny worked for Kennametal Inc as Senior Global Product Manager for Cutting Tools; during his tenure with ATI Stellram and with Peterson Tools, Osny held the Global Director of Sales & Marketing position; and at MSC Industrial Supply and at the Hoffman Group, Osny was their Senior Product Manager of Cutting Tools.

Diane Ferrera is the Director of Human Resources for AccuRounds, an Advanced Manufacturing company that provides custom precision machining services for several industries including Aerospace, Defense, Semi-Conductor, Automotive, Medical Instrumentation and Device, Chromatography Analysis, Life Sciences, Dental, Alternative Energy, Oil and Gas, Robotics and Emerging Technologies.

Diane is active in several industry and educational organizations, including the Southeastern Massachusetts STEM Network and various Workforce Investment Boards. She is also an Advisory Board member for Machine Technology at Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical School. 

Diane has extensive experience in all HR disciplines, working in the manufacturing and wholesale/retail food industries. Diane received her bachelor’s degree in Education and Psychology/Sociology from the University of Massachusetts Boston, an Associates degree from Fisher College, and earned the SPHR Certification from the Society for Human Resource Management.

Ted Force has over 40 years’ experience in the Manufacturing industry. He is currently the Director of Milling and Programing at Medical Device Implants (MDI) in Lancaster PA.   He is also an Adjunct Professor for Harrisburg Area Community College. During his tenure, Ted has become a Subject Matter Expert in the fields of Manufacturing Engineering and Multi-Axis Programming. He has used his tribal knowledge to educate and train others not only throughout the local business community, but also nationally, as a member of the Precision Machined Parts Association. (PMPA) He has been the Chairman of the National Technical Conference. In 2019, Ted was awarded the coveted Golden Micrometer. When Ted is not in the shop, he can be found spending time with one of his 6 children or riding his Harley around the Pennsylvania countryside. Ted’s mantra is “Whatever you want to do, if you want to be great at it, you have to love it and be able to make sacrifices for it.”

Miles Free is the Director of Industry Affairs for the Precision Machined Products Association. Prior to joining PMPA in 2003, Mr. Free was Director of Quality and Development, at Republic Engineered Products. Miles started his career at United States Steel, where he served in environmental engineering and laboratory supervisor positions. He joined Bliss and Laughlin Steel in 1985, where he lead the implementation of the cold finished bar Industry’s first Quality Operating System awarded Q-1 status. He has had hundreds of published articles, hosts PMPA’s Speaking of Precision podcast and has and over a million views on his blog precision Speaking of Precision.  He is a widely sought presenter on problem solving, quality, and technical subjects. Miles holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Youngstown State University and a MBA from Walsh University.

Ed Garber is National Sales Manager for Star CNC Machine Tool Corp who works with manufacturers in many industries to provide them solutions for machining precision parts.

Ed believes that a Swiss-type CNC lathe can be your most productive piece of equipment in the proper application.

Ed is a machinist by trade with 16 years in machine shops and completed an internship at NASA Glenn Research Center before stepping into a sales role.  His exposure to Swiss-type CNC lathes began over 25 years ago and has spent the last 18 years at Star CNC.  With a total of over 38 years focused entirely in the metal cutting industry, Ed found Swiss-type machining and hasn’t looked back.

The honor was be presented to him at the ASQ Quality Conference in Seattle in late April. He was also recognized in Quality Magazine as the 2019 Professional of the Year which was presented to him at the annual Quality Show in October.

Gary is a graduate of CSU-Long Beach and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Technology. On top of this, Gary holds many certifications, including Certified Quality Engineer and a lifetime credential as a Certified Instructor from the state of California.

From there Mark worked for a major CNC machine tool builder. This allowed him to crisscross the United States and Canada servicing Fortune 500 manufacturers all the way down to one-man job shops. For the last twenty years he has worked in progressively higher roles at two different global cutting tool manufacturers. These roles have included technical service, product management, training, marketing, and sales. Mark holds an A.A.S. in Manufacturing from Triton College and a B.S. in Business Administration from Carroll University.

Jack Horner

Jack Horner has been in the metals industry since July 1986, starting in the Spectrographic laboratory as a Chemical Analyst with Brush Wellman (Materion).  He progressed through additional roles while at Materion including ASTM participation, ISO management, Lab Accreditation and laying the groundwork for a LIMS system.  After 11 years, he accepted a position with Chase Brass & Copper Company as Quality Supervisor for the metals QA/QC laboratory, and was promoted to Quality Manager in 2002. During his time with Wieland – Chase,  he has been involved with many continuous improvement projects in the mill as well as providing customer technical assistance for machining brass rod products.  Other responsibilities include day-to-day quality support, management of the ISO quality system and is a contributing member of ASTM.  Jack holds a BA in Chemistry from Cedarville University (1985) and has lived in Ohio his entire life.

Kevin Johnson is the President of FISCHER Special Tooling Corporation located in Mentor, a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio.  Kevin has been running this organization for over 20 years and has implemented many of the Technical and Management concepts that he learned from attending these PMPA Conferences.   

Kevin has a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial & Systems Engineering from THE Ohio State University.  Prior to joining FISCHER, he had worked in both Appliance and Automotive assembly plants.  Kevin has been an active contributor to the PMPA List-serves as well as a member of both the local and national levels of PMPA.  Additionally, FISCHER Special Tooling has exhibited at every Precision Machining Technology Show since its debut in 2001.

Kevin is proud of the fact that many PMPA members are surprised once they eventually discover that FISCHER is actually a “Tech” Member.  (This is most likely because, Kevin is a terrible salesman).

Having worked in the industry for seventeen years in both operations and human resource roles; she currently oversees a wide range of HR functions including on-boarding, benefits management, staff training, safety, and regulatory compliance. She oversees the company’s internship and community outreach efforts.

Paula is passionate about creating pathways for students, and those needing job training, to fill the skills gap in the manufacturing industry. She has built sector partnerships with industry groups, vocational and academic high schools, community colleges, universities, workforce investment boards, STEM networks, and the National Manufacturing Day movement.

Courtney Ortner and her husband, Steve, founded Absolute Machine Tools in 1988.  Courtney currently serves on the PMPA Board of Directors and Chair of the Technical Members as well as Vice President of PMPA’s Northern Ohio Chapter.  She held the Chief Marketing Officer position at Absolute until recently when she decided to create a new position as Director of Marketing – A+ Automation Team.  Automation, specifically robots, have become her passion recognizing that automation will be key to the future longevity and success of both Absolute Machine Tools and manufacturers in the metal cutting industry.

Mike Petrusch serves as Vice President for Manufacturing at Cox Manufacturing Co. Inc., an ISO 9001:2015 certified, precision machined parts manufacturer in San Antonio, Texas. 

Prior to joining Cox Manufacturing in 2004, Mike held positions with Gosiger and J.R. Kuntz, both based in Dayton, Ohio.  He also has operated as an independent contractor specializing in machine tool controls. His areas of expertise include robotic systems, high production metal cutting, machinery design, CNC and PLC control systems, and plant management. 

A member of the San Antonio Manufacturers Association, Mike earned a Lean Manufacturing Certification from the University of Texas at San Antonio and completed the Leadership Development Program® through the Center for Creative Leadership

 With a strong commitment to manufacturing education and developing a qualified workforce, Mike works with Advanced Manufacturing Advisory Council of the Alamo Colleges.  He served on the University of Dayton’s School of Engineering Academic Advisory Committee for Engineering Technology.

Ray Schnell is the Material Technical Specialist for Valbruna Slater Stainless, Inc., located in Ft Wayne, Indiana.  Ray has both his B.S. and M.S. in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, from Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA.

Ray is retired from Carpenter Technology Corp., located in Reading, PA, where he worked for 32 years.  He held several technical and quality positions, during his tenure, but he is better known as being Carpenter’s Machinability Specialist.

Ray began his “second” career with Valbruna in April 2016.  Ray’s main priority, is to work with Valbruna’s customers, here in the United States and in Canada.  His efforts are concentrated in assisting customers to better understand the unique characteristics of Stainless Steel and helping them to take full advantage of the machinability attributes of Valbruna’s products.

Dave Seabrook has been at Micron Manufacturing for 24 years and has served many functions from receiving raw material to shipping product to customers. Dave was the Quality Manager for 4 years but for the last 10 years has spent his days as IT Manager and a Continuous Improvement leader. He has overseen Micron’s network including the communication of its production equipment, gaging, and tool cribs. Over the last several years he has worked to secure this equipment and ensure backups are in place in the event of an attack or system failure.
