Supply Chain

According to Industry Week, the recent manufacturing supply chain changes may turn into blessings and curses. China is reopening after COVID lockdowns which will mean more production and could further choke the global shipping crisis. Neon gas shortages caused by the Russian-Ukraine invasion – Ukraine was a primary producer – has negatively impacted semiconductor production.  However, new foundries have been announced which could fill demand although it will take time. Additionally, a storage tanker holding more than 1 million barrels of oil off the coast of Yemen may breakup with September storms. If such a disaster occurs, the cost will be unprecedented and cause a ripple effect on the economy.

Employment

Good news on the manufacturing employment front.  According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, manufacturing employment continued its rise and was up 18,000 in May.  Retail declined by 61,000 which may indicate an opportunity to recruit former retail workers into our industry.
