Significant decline in energy use and intensity by manufacturers show improvements in both energy efficiency and changes in manufacturing output mix.

The US Energy Information Agency  released data March 19th  documenting a 17% decrease in total energy consumption by the manufacturing sector from 2002 to 2010.

Manufacturing output only declined by  3% over the same time period.

Improvement due to both efficiency and mix.

  1. This is great improvement, very impressive! Decrease of 17% in energy consumption in the manufacturing sector is amazing. Its good for the future.

  2. Miles, interesting post and thank you. While it seems the improvement was based on efficiency and mix, would you have any support information as it relates to the off shoring of manufacturing during the 2002-2006 periods and the recession period 2007-2010? Could this reduction be related to these factors more than an efficiency and mix factor?
