Driving Improvements with Data: How a PMPA Member Saved $1.4M in 11 Months

 Manufacturing Positivity

Manufacturing Production
Manufacturing Production rose just 0.2 percent in January, up slightly after a 0.1 percent decline in December. Not bad, considering tariffs on raw materials, supply chain bottlenecks, workforce shortages and ongoing government orders related to COVID variants.
Link: https://www.federalreserve.gov/releases/g17/Current/g17.pdf

Total Industrial Production
Total Industrial Production climbed 1.4 percent in January – its highest value since December 2018.

Retail Sales
Retail Sales in January grew by 3.8 percent, reversing December’s 2.5 percent decline. Over the last 12 months, retail spending jumped 13 percent as the economy reopened.
Click on Press Release for Advance Monthly Retail sales at : https://www.census.gov/economic-indicators/

Business Inventories
U.S. total business end-of-month inventories for December 2021 were $2,206.7 billion, up 2.1 percent (+/- 0.1 percent) from last month.  This is in contrast to total US Business Sales which were $1,717.2 billion, down 0.7 percent (+/- 0.1 percent) from last month.

Contract Review is Critical
According to a front page headline story in Automotive News, automaker Stellantis has issued new terms which place all risk on suppliers for “foreseeable disruptions.”

Apparently your shop in Punxatawney is supposed to take steps to ensure that no freighters get stuck in the Suez Canal. Pay attention to the terms of sale when dealing with your OEM customers. Terms like this could put you out of business- even if by escalating the attorney fees you need to pay to fight in case of such a dispute.

PMPA shared this critical news item via our member company CEO and Corporate listserves Monday.  Where do you get the breaking news that makes a difference?

Email Listserve Digest Option

You can never get enough information to help run your shops, and in a pinch where do PMPA members go for an answer to an immediate need?  The Listserves!

Sometimes, a listserve thread may take on a life of it’s own.  It can be a pleasant distraction and it engages a lot of people in conversation.  Or, it may be an annoyance to those who don’t like the build up of emails throughout their busy day.

You have an option!  If you would rather not receive individual listserve emails, you can change your receipt option to DIGEST and receive ONE email containing all the email posts for that list at the end of the day.

  • Go to the MY PROFILE page on the PMPA website and click on Edit My Email Lists.  You’ll need your PMPA passwords to log in.  (if you forgot those, click on Obtain Password on the MY PROFILE page)
  • Once on the Listserve Subscription page, you’ll note a drop-down box to the right of each listserve heading.  Choose one of these:
    • Not Subscribed (to NOT be on the list)
    • Subscribe (to receive individual emails)
    • Digest (to receive one daily email)

PMPA’s 2021 December Business Trends Report and End-of-the-Year Summary Released

The PMPA December 2021 Business Trends Sales Index came in at 138, the highest December value ever, and unseasonably high. That 138 was 10 points (or 7.8 percent) higher than December 2020’s value, and 22.5 percent higher than the five- year average for the index for the month of December.

While  December sales were down 6 points (or 4.1 percent) from November’s levels, they still contributed to a strong finish, resulting in the Calendar year average sales to be 141. This 141 exceeded our April 2021 prediction of 137 for the year. A surprisingly positive reading considering the events of the year- ongoing uncertainty due to Covid-19, tariffs, and supply chain difficulties.

If you are not currently participating in PMPA’s Monthly Business Trends reporting, you are missing a great peer benchmark and a tool to provide you with confidence for your business decisions. Contact Veronica Durden to sign up.

December 2021 Business Trends Report

Manufacturing Positivity

  • According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, real Gross Domestic Product(GDP) increased at an annual rate of 6.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2021 (table 1), according to the “advance” estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the third quarter, real GDP increased 2.3 percent.

    LINK: https://www.bea.gov/sites/default/files/2022-01/gdp4q21_adv.pdf

  • The U.S. economy rebounded very strongly in 2021, with real GDP coming in at 5.7%. Compare that to the 3.4% decline in 2020. The current forecast for 2022 is ~4.3% growth.

  • New Orders for Durable Goods fell 0.9% from a record $270.1 billion in November to $267.6 billion in December, according to the Advance report from the US Census. The decline in the headline number was due to decreases in aircraft and parts orders.  However, excluding transportation equipment, new durable goods orders increased 0.4% in December. New orders have jumped 12.7% over the past 12 months, or 11.9% with transportation equipment excluded.

Update Conference Welcomes Replacement Speaker: Ryan Pohl

We were advised a few weeks ago that, unfortunately, Randy Beck (Ernst&Young) would be unable to present in New Orleans.

The Update Committee has confirmed replacement speaker Ryan Pohl to discuss “Building Talent on Purpose.”  He will help take the mystery out of talent management by explaining how your company’s seemingly separate processes for recruiting, training and retention are actually connected, controllable and measurable.

Ryan offers a very down-to-earth perspective, having completed an apprenticeship as a CNC machinist, worked as a machine shop teacher, and for the last 15 years trained thousands of manufacturers at hundreds of different companies as an industrial trainer and consultant.  (Some of you may remember Ryan from a past NTC Conference.)

OSHA’s Emergency Temporary Standard for Vaccines, Masks and Testing Has Been Withdrawn

Known as the Vaccine and Mask Mandate or ETS, it applied to employers with 100 or more employees.  It was initially overturned in the 5th circuit, reconsidered by the 6th circuit, and stayed by the US Supreme Court.

On Monday, January 24, 2022, OSHA scheduled the Federal Register publication of its withdrawal notice to be printed on January 26, 2022. The summary states “OSHA is withdrawing the November 5, 2021, emergency temporary standard (ETS) which was issued to protect unvaccinated employees of large employers (100 or more employees) from the risk of contracting COVID–19 by strongly encouraging vaccination.” The withdrawal will be effective on January 26, 2022.

Manufacturing Positivity

  • The two regional manufacturing surveys from the Federal Reserve  last week showed mixed results. The Empire State Survey, reported activity contracting in manufacturing for the first time since June 2020, with declining new orders, slowing shipments, and employment. TheJanuary Manufacturing Business Outlook Survey.(MBOS)  produced by the Philadelphia Fed showed rebounding  general activity, shipments, and new orders for manufacturers in their region in January after slowing in December. Our takeaway, manufacturing growth just might start to be leveling.

  • Both surveys noted ongoing challenges with supply chain and inflationary pressures faced by manufacturers. The Empire survey’s indexes for future prices paid and received both rose to record highs. The Philly MBOS prices paid index increased 6 points to 72.5. Almost 73 percent of the firms reported increases in input prices, while none reported decreases; 27 percent of the firms reported no change.
